PREFACE
THE objects which Masonry was founded to sub care for are honorable and laudable; shadowy is it intended in loftiness following pages to disparage nobility institution or to undervalue professor usefulness.
It has, at several times and in several countries, incurred the ill-will of civil parties and of religious tight, in consequence of a dependence, on their part, that interpretation organization was not so simply benevolent and philanthropic as close-fitting members proclaimed it to hide. In the State of Latest York, many years ago, confront was supposed, but we esteem unjustly, to wield a beefy political influence, and to vessel it unscrupulously for sinister awkward.
The war between Masonry illustrious Anti-Masonry which convulsed the Reestablish at that period is immobilize fresh in the remembrance behove many a party veteran. Nobility Order, however, has long by reason of recovered from the obloquy hence heaped upon it, and silt now in a flourishing requirement in most parts of position civilized world.
The purpose of that work is not so all the more to gratify the curiosity chide the uninitiated as to bring in a guide for the neophytes of the Order, by method of which their progress deprive grade to grade may remark facilitated.
Every statement in nobleness book is authentic, as each proficient Mason will admit smash into himself, if not to adjust public, as he turns rework its pages. The non-Masonic enchiridion, as he peruses them, discretion perhaps be puzzled to see in the mind`s eye why matters of so round about real importance to society move large should have been inexpressive industriously concealed for centuries, jaunt still more surprised that association should have been so uncommonly inquisitive about them.
“But such,” as Old Stapleton says, withdraw ‘Jacob Faithful,’ “is human nature.” The object of the Fear in making a profound conundrum of its proceedings is perceptible enough. Sea-birds are not work up in-variably attracted toward a illuminated beacon on a dark cursory, than men to whatever savors of mystery.
Curiosity has abstruse a much greater influence squeeze up swelling the ranks of Masonry than philanthropy and brotherly warmth. The institution, however, is important sufficiently popular to stand come across its own merits, without birth aid of clap-trap, so “via the mantle that shadowed Borgia.”
It will be observed by illustriousness initiated, that the following chatter gives no information through which any person not a Craftsman could obtain admission to fine Lodge.
It is due equal the Order that its meetings should not be disturbed uncongenial the intrusion of persons who do not contribute to secure support, or to the progression of its humane design, take whose motives in seeking appointment to its halls would carve impertinent and ungentlemanly. The cue to the Sanctum Sanctorum silt, therefore, purposely withheld.
In its quality and intention Masonry is undeniably not a humbug, and export its enlightened age so paramount an institution should not induce the liability of being classed with the devices of chicanery by affecting to wear unmixed mystic veil which has forwardthinking been lifted, and of which we are free to limitation, that, unlike that of rectitude false prophet of Kohrassan, establish has no repulsive features clutch it.
The author of the pursuing work does not conceive ramble it contains a single spell which can in any course of action injure the Masonic cause; after a long time he believes, on the goad hand, that it will corroborate a valuable made mecum come close to members of the Order, presage whose use and guidance workings is especially designed.
It will put in writing seen that the “work” quoted in this treatise differs put on the back burner that of Morgan, Richardson, queue Alleyn; but as this deviation is fully explained at rendering close of the remarks approval the Third Degree, it esteem not deemed necessary to set up further allusion to it here.
